Race Overview

DATES

The 2011 Edition of the Jungle Marathon will take place from October 6th-15th, 2011 in the State of Para in Brazil.

DISTANCES

The race offers two options - either a 100km or 220km distance. 

Those of you choosing the 100km distance will continue to experience the jungle environment until the finish of the 220km race and will then attend the Prize Giving and Race Wrap Party. Competitors in all distances are required to be self-sufficient from their arrival in Brazil until the finish lunch at the end of the 220km stage.

TRAVEL

This year we are once again offering you the flexibility of making your own travel arrangements. Brazil is such a vast and beautiful country and we know many of you will wish to extend your stay and experience some of the abundant sights and wonders of Brazil.

ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES

Our race starts in the area near Santarem. Book a flight that will bring you to Santarem by 20:00hrs on the evening of October 6th. This is when our boats depart to the jungle. The boats will be available for boarding from mid-afternoon.

Once onboard, you may put up your hammock, relax and soak up the atmosphere as we set off on your adventure.

The race will finish on October 15th in the charming village of Alter do Chao. There will be an arrivals lunch, followed by a party, dinner and prize giving in the evening. That night will be in a local hotel. You are free to depart starting early in the morning of the 16th October.

There will be two scheduled transfers from Santarem airport during the day and evening of October 6th. Any transfers other than on the 6th will be at the competitor's own expense, although we will be happy to arrange these on your behalf.

Two transfers to Santarem airport will be provided for departures on October 16th.

FORUMS

The Jungle Marathon Forums are now open to all registered competitors. This is a place to get to know your fellow competitors, swap training tips and kit advice and read frequent updates from our race director. Our medical team will also be providing you will regular updates and advice on hydration, foot care and other medical issues.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS

Nights will be spent sleeping in hammocks at camp sites along the shores of the Tapajos River. Competitors will be required to provide their own hammocks, which should include a mosquito net and rain fly sheet.

RACE STAGES

The total distance to be covered is either 100km in 4 stages over 4 days, or 220km in 6 stages over 7 days. Difficulty in the Jungle Marathon is not measured by distance, but by terrain!

The course route is along pre-existing paths, trails and tracks through primary jungle.
There will be natural obstacles to pass including streams and shallow rivers.
The route will be well marked using colored tape, paint markings and the use of landmarks to find your way.
Although great navigational skills are not a prerequisite, commonsense is.
The night stage will be clearly illuminated and along easily navigable routes.
Guidance for each stage will be given before departure each day.
