2012 Race Rules & Regulations
General Race Rules
1. All Runners must check-in prior to the start of the race on the morning of the race in
addition to attending the race meeting. Each individual member of every relay team
must check-in as well.
2. There are 3 races occurring consecutively on the race course. 100-mile, 100-mile
relay, and 50-mile. The overall winner of each race for men and women will be the first
in each category to cross the finish line. There are no gender categories for relay
results.
3. Your race number must be worn at all times on the front of the body. If you add or
remove clothing your race number must remain visible at all times.
4. Once the race starts the race clock runs continuously until the 36-hour cut-off time.
No runners/teams will be allowed to continue forward on the course after the 36-hour
cut-off time.
5. Intermediate cut-off time: Each runner/team must be beyond the 36-mile mark on the
course within 12 hours of the race start. This is the intersection of Hwy 20 and the Mesa
Falls Scenic Byway. There are no exceptions to this rule.
6. All runners must run in a single file line at all times. Runners may only move forward
on the course while running facing on-coming traffic on the left-hand side of the
roadway. If you have a pacer run with you they may not at any time run along-side you.
They must always run behind the registered runner. Relay teams are not allowed to
have pacers of any kind at any time. Relay teams are only allowed to have one runner
moving forward on the course at a time.
7. Runners, pacers, and crew members are required to comply with all pedestrian-related laws of the applicable state. Failure to do so can result in disqualification at the
Race Directors discretion.
8. Each runner, pacer and crew member is responsible for their own personal safety
and are to yield to any and all vehicular traffic at all times
9. Runners/teams are required to check-in or sign-in at each required checkpoint along
the course.
10. All Runners, crew, pacers, supporters, and race officials must take great care to
properly discard all trash items and utilize proper actions as to not damage the natural
environment in any way.
11. All racers, crew and staff must display courtesy, good taste, decorum, and
sportsmanship at all times. Nudity is specifically not allowed, especially in a snowstorm.
Registration Requirements.
1. Each runner/team must complete an entry form for their respective event and pay all
registration fees prior to the race start.
2. Each runner/relay team runner must sign a General Release and/or waiver prior to
the race start.
3. Each runner/relay team runner must attend the Pre-Race Meeting. Those racers who
do not complete the scheduled check-in and attend their assigned meeting will not be
allowed to participate. No exceptions.
4. At the race meeting all runners will be required to show the required safety equipment
prior to receive your registration packet, number, etc.
5. All runners must be at least 18 years in age when they register for the race.
Support Crew and Assistance
1. All runners must move forward on the course under their own power without any
additional assistance. This includes drafting, the use of any type of trekking pole or
walking stick, or any other form of physical assistance from another person or
mechanical device.
2. All distances of this race are self-supported. Each runner or team is allowed one
crew vehicle on the course.
3. Crew vehicles must have their hazard flashers on at all times. This includes when
being parked on the side of the roadway.
4. Each crew vehicle must have a sign affixed to the front and back of the vehicle
stating “RUNNER ON ROAD”
5. No support of any kind can be provided to a runner from a moving vehicle. When
parked on the roadside, ALL FOUR TIRES, of the crew vehicle MUST be completely off
the roadway. Please exercise great caution and safety when choosing where to stop to
support a runner.
6. Runners in the individual 100-mile race are allowed to utilize a pacer after mile 50 on
the course. Runners may not be accompanied by more than one pacer at any given
time while making forward progress on the race course.
7. Runners must not run abreast with other runners or with pacers. All running must be
single-file. Pacers may not run in front of race entrants at any time.
8. Bicycles may not be on the course at any time by runners, crew members, or
supporters.
9. Runners or pacers may not use illegal drugs, stimulants, or dope, as well as alcohol
of any kind, during the race or at any official race events or activities.
10. Any crew vehicle receiving a citation for any violation of the motor vehicle code in
any jurisdiction will result in disqualification for that runner or relay team.
Relay-Specific Rules
1. Relay teams may be comprised of up to 6 runners.
2. Relay teams may alternate runners completely at their own discretion.
3. Relay teams may only have one runner moving forward on the course at a time.
4. There may only be one vehicle on the course supporting each relay team. No other
vehicles may provide any support of any kind. Violation of this rule will result in
disqualification from the race.
Safety and Medical
1. Safety is always the most important issue. This race is being held on public roadways
without any special traffic control. Runners and pacers are always responsible for their
own personal safety.
2. The use of I.V.s (intravenous fluids) by runners are explicitly prohibited in this race. If
a runner receives medical attention during the race requiring the use of an I.V. the
runner is automatically disqualified from the race and must withdraw and cease moving
forward on the course.
3. From 6:00pm to 6:00am each day (night) of the event, while outside on the race
course, all runners and all pacers must wear reflective material facing in all four
directions, as well as blinking red lights facing front and rear.
4. Runners are responsible for both their own and their pacer’s actions. Any violation to
any of these rules or other instructions from race officials by either the runner or pacer
will result in possible disqualification by the runner.
5. Be careful when crossing roadways at all times. Please do not forget that you are on
a busy road traveled by vehicles at significant speeds. You must assume that vehicular
traffic will not see you and will not yield to you!
6. See the above section for additional information on crew and crew vehicle safety.
Failure to follow all safety regulations is grounds for immediate disqualification at the
Race Director’s or other race officials discretion.
Leaving the Course or Withdrawing
1. The entire course must be covered by each runner or relay team. In the event of a
runner getting lost they may receive assistance back to the exact location they went off
course. There will not be any time adjustments for any of these instances.
2. Racers may only leave the course for appropriate reasons such as rest, medical
attention, restrooms, etc. Focus must be kept on the speedy completion of the course.
3. Should a runner decide to quit the race, they must immediately notify a race official at
the next closest aid station or time checkpoint. We must be able to account for all
runners at all times on the course.
4. All Emergency Evacuation costs for participants or crews will be borne by that person
or their heirs. The race organizers are in no way liable or responsible for emergency
evacuation. We strongly encourage every competitor to purchase a specific travel
insurance policy to cover these costs.
Rule Enforcement and Penalties
1. The race rules are in place to insure the safety of all participants and to provide a
level playing field for all competitors. Compliance with these rules also keeps us in
compliance with authorities that grant the permits for this event and will allow it to
continue in the future. All rules regarding safety will be strictly enforced.
2. Any rule infraction by a runner or their pacer that violates the rules of the race that
constitute cheating will result in immediate disqualification.
3. The Race Director has the authority, at any time, to overrule any rule or invent a new
rule based on extenuating, unforeseen, and/or unusual circumstances and/or to
maintain the integrity and fair play necessary for the successful completion, and
continuation, of the race. The Race Director has ultimate authority in regards to all rules,
their interpretation, and their enforcement. There are no appeals. All entrants in the
race, and their pacers, willingly acknowledge this fact, as well as all other race rules, by
attending the race in any capacity.
