The National Institutes of Health considers MPDs and other such illnesses “orphan diseases,” conditions that affect fewer than 200,000 Americans at any one time and thus get little research funding or attention from drug companies. “I couldn’t even find an advocacy group,” Rosen says. “That blew me away.”

Terry MadlJuan Alderete

 

On May 1st, 2007 Alderete announced that he had been diagnosed with a rare blood disease called polycythemia vera. However he also mentioned that he is feeling fine, will experience no side effects from the medication, and will continue to play music. Since discovering his condition, Juan has agreed to be come a spokesperson for the MPD Foundation.
